Top Signs and Symptoms of Imposter Syndrome You Shouldn’t Ignore

Many people suffer from imposter syndrome that they don't realize. It impacts students, professionals, entrepreneurs, and even those who are very successful. Individuals who suffer from it many times feel less able than others think they are, despite having a lot of evidence that they are.

These emotions can be more or less subtle and have a negative effect on self-confidence, competence, and mental well-being if not addressed. If you're familiar with the symptoms of imposter syndrome at an early stage, you'll be able to manage it and keep it from interfering with your life.

Staying in self doubt even after doing well

One of the most obvious symptoms of imposter syndrome is when people doubt their own achievements, even when they are clearly successful. He or she is able to perform well and is applauded, or he or she achieves important goals and feels unworthy of them.

They may not feel proud, but rather think that they are lucky, or that people who are impressed by them are exaggerating. This attitude just perpetuates a vicious cycle; no matter how much they achieve, it is never enough!

Fear of Being Exposed as a Fraud

Individuals who suffer from imposter syndrome tend to have a fear that they are not as good as they think. Even if qualified, they fear they are “faking it” and will be exposed.

This fear can cause undue stress in the work and school setting. It can also result in over-preparing, as well as avoiding opportunities to prove their perceived “inadequacy.”

Struggling to take criticism well or accept praise/compliments

Another frequent symptom is being unable to accept positive feedback. Praise is likely to be ignored or minimized by someone with imposter syndrome.

They may feel good about the compliment, but feel it is too much or perhaps not really their. This eventually keeps them from developing positive self-confidence and self-awareness.

Overworking and Perfectionism

Common coping mechanisms from people who struggle with imposter syndrome are overworking to compensate for their self-doubt. They may think that if they don't do it well, they will be criticized or they will fail.

It can sometimes cause perfectionism, where any error is too embarrassing to be accepted. Standards that are high and up to the mark are good, but excessive perfectionism can result in burnout, stress, and exhaustion.

Attributing Success to Luck or External Factors

People see success through external interpretations and do not acknowledge their personal capabilities. Instead of acknowledging skills, effort, or intelligence people prefer to say they were "lucky" or that environmental factors led to their easy success.

The attitude obstructs their ability to recognize their personal development; therefore they remain unable to build confidence after multiple successful experiences.

The Fear of Not Taking New Opportunities

People with imposter syndrome don't like to check out and take on new tries or assignments. For example, they might choose not to pursue opportunities because they worry about failure and being found out even though they are able to do the work.

The fear of failure that stops this behavior could inhibit personal advancement. The decisions they make subsequently bring them to the realization that they have insufficient readiness or capability despite their actual competence.

Have you lost the feeling of belonging in academia or your career field? Are you uncomfortable within academic or professional surroundings?

The common emotional signal of feeling out of place emerges mainly when people around you seem more confident or knowledgeable. People experience it at their workplaces and schools, and social groups also.

People sense a deep feeling of inferiority, although exclusion signals are absent from their environment. The difficulty lies in developing an authentic engagement with the process to share thoughts freely.

Anxiety Before or After Performance

Imposter syndrome can lead to anxiety about tasks, presentations or responsibilities. Prior to an event, there can be a lot of anxiety about getting it wrong. Then there will be overthinking that maybe it wasn't successful, even though it was successful.

This kind of nervousness can make people feel unenjoyable and mentally tired eventually.

Experiencing internalized failure.Having trouble learning from positive experiences.

People often don't 'catch' what they have accomplished if they don't have the opportunity for long-term success. They feel like every achievement is for a short time; it is not really what they can do.

They don't become more self-assured as they go; they become less self-assured after each success and remain in the same emotional state.

Final Thoughts

Symptoms of imposter syndrome  is not a lack of ability. It's a mindset that distorts the concept of success. The longer it goes untreated, the more it can impact confidence, motivation, and mental health.

The first step to changing that mentality is to recognize these signs. As you become more aware and reflect in a gradual way you can begin to be pleased with the success, accept it, and move forward with more confidence in yourself personally and professionally.
