One of the best things about Pokémon is that every new game takes you to a brand new region. New places, new Pokémon, new story. Some regions feel like a whole new world. Some feel like they were rushed out the door.

I ranked every main series Pokémon region from worst to best — based on map design, story quality, atmosphere, and how memorable the whole experience felt. This is my honest opinion and a lot of people might disagree — but that's what makes this fun.

Let's go.

9. Kalos (Pokémon X and Y)

Kalos is based on France and it is genuinely one of the most beautiful regions Game Freak has ever designed. The cities are gorgeous. Lumiose City feels like Paris. The Pokémon introduced in this gen are some of the best designs ever.

So why is it last?

Because the story is almost nonexistent. Team Flare wants to wipe out humanity to make the world more beautiful — which sounds dramatic — but they're handled so poorly that it feels like nothing. Lysandre goes from mentor figure to villain in about five minutes. The legendary Pokémon Xerneas and Yveltal barely feel important.

The game also holds your hand more than any other Pokémon game. There's barely any challenge. The whole experience feels unfinished, like they spent all their time on the visuals and forgot to write a story.

Beautiful region. Empty game.

8. Galar (Pokémon Sword and Shield)

Galar is based on the UK and the aesthetic is great. The stadiums feel exciting, the Wild Area was genuinely new and interesting, and some of the Pokémon designs like Dragapult and Corviknight are incredible.

But the story is very weak. Chairman Rose is one of the least threatening villains in the series. His plan makes almost no sense — he's trying to solve an energy crisis that won't happen for 1,000 years by releasing a legendary monster right now. During your championship match. The urgency doesn't work.

Bede and Marnie as rivals are actually good characters but they don't get enough screen time. The game also got a lot of criticism for cutting the National Pokédex and limiting which Pokémon you could transfer in.

The DLC — Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra — were genuinely better than the base game though.

7. Paldea (Pokémon Scarlet and Violet)

Paldea is based on Spain and it was the first truly open world Pokémon game. That alone makes it historic. You can go almost anywhere from the start. The three storylines — Victory Road, Path of Legends, and Starfall Street — give you real freedom in how you play.

The story also has one of the most emotional endings in Pokémon history. The Area Zero section and everything involving the professors genuinely surprised a lot of players. It was dark, sad, and actually meaningful.

So why is it this low? The game ran terribly on launch. Frame rate drops, clipping issues, Pokémon floating in the air. It was one of the buggiest mainline Pokémon releases ever. A great story and open world design held back by a game that needed more development time.

6. Unova — Black 2 and White 2 (Pokémon Black 2 and White 2)

Black 2 and White 2 are technically sequels set in Unova two years after the original games. They expand the region significantly, add new areas, and have a much richer world to explore.

The story is more personal and grounded than the original Black and White. Team Plasma's return feels earned. Hugh's storyline about getting his sister's Purrloin back adds real emotional stakes that feel human. The PokéStar Studios and Join Avenue side content is some of the most creative in the series.

These games proved that Pokémon sequels can work really well — and it's a shame Game Freak hasn't made another direct sequel since.

5. Hoenn (Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald)

Hoenn is based on Japan's Kyushu region and it has one of the most unique designs in the series. It's a water-heavy region — maybe too water-heavy if you ask some people — but it gives Hoenn its own distinct identity.

The story involves two teams, Team Magma and Team Aqua, both trying to summon a legendary Pokémon to reshape the world. In Emerald you deal with both at the same time. It's not the deepest story ever written but it's fun and the stakes feel real when Kyogre or Groudon actually wakes up.

The secret bases, contests, and the Battle Frontier in Emerald made Hoenn one of the most content-rich games of its era. And the remakes Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire added the Delta Episode — a story about stopping a meteor from destroying the world — which was genuinely great.

4. Johto (Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal)

Johto is based on the Kansai region of Japan and it holds a very special place in the hearts of older Pokémon fans. The atmosphere here is different from everywhere else — it feels ancient, spiritual, and mysterious.

The gyms each have a distinct personality. The rival Silver is one of the most interesting rivals in the series because he's genuinely awful as a person and you watch him slowly grow. The legendary Pokémon — Ho-Oh and Lugia — feel mythical in a way that's hard to describe.

And of course, after beating the Pokémon League you can travel all the way back to Kanto and challenge those gyms too. Two full regions in one game. It was never matched again.

HeartGold and SoulSilver are still considered some of the best remakes ever made. Johto's legacy is rock solid.

3. Unova (Pokémon Black and White)

Black and White have the best story in mainline Pokémon history. It's not even close.

N is the greatest character Game Freak has ever written. He grew up only around Pokémon, was told by his father Ghetsis that humans abuse Pokémon, and genuinely believes he's doing the right thing by trying to separate humans and Pokémon forever. He's not evil. He's wrong, but for understandable reasons. That makes him fascinating.

Ghetsis using N as a puppet the whole time — manipulating his own son for personal power — is one of the darkest moments in the series. The final battle between you, N, and Ghetsis feels genuinely emotional.

The region itself is also cleverly designed. Unova is based on New York City and the layout reflects that — a circular central city (Castelia) with routes branching out in every direction.

The Pokémon designs were divisive when they came out but most fans have come around on them. Gen 5 is widely considered the high point of Pokémon storytelling.

2. Sinnoh (Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum)

Sinnoh is based on Japan's Hokkaido region and it has some of the most ambitious lore and world-building in any Pokémon game.

The story involves Team Galactic and their leader Cyrus trying to destroy the entire universe and rebuild it without emotion or spirit. Cyrus is one of the most chilling villains in the series because he's calm, calculated, and genuinely believes the universe is flawed. He doesn't want power — he wants nothingness.

The mythology of Sinnoh is deep. Dialga controls time. Palkia controls space. Giratina controls antimatter. Arceus created everything. The Distortion World where you fight Giratina is one of the most visually stunning and conceptually wild moments in Pokémon history.

Pokémon Platinum in particular is close to a perfect Pokémon game. The Distortion World, the expanded story, the Battle Frontier, and the improved pacing make it the definitive version of Sinnoh.

1. Kanto (Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow)

Look — Kanto is not the most complex region. The story is simple. The villain Team Rocket is basically just a criminal organization without any grand plan to destroy the world. There's no deep lore about creation or time or antimatter.

But Kanto is number one because it did everything first.

The design of Kanto feels perfectly balanced. Every town has a personality. Every route connects naturally. The pacing of the gyms is almost perfect. Pallet Town to Viridian Forest to Pewter City to Cerulean City — every step of that journey feels memorable.

The 151 Pokémon introduced in Kanto are iconic. Almost everyone in the world recognizes Pikachu, Charizard, Mewtwo, Gengar, and Eevee. Kanto characters and Pokémon appear in everything from movies to merchandise to other video games. That level of cultural impact is unmatched.

FireRed and LeafGreen are solid remakes. Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee gave Kanto a beautiful modern visual makeover. And Kanto is the setting of Pokémon GO — the game that brought Pokémon back to mainstream culture in 2016.

Kanto isn't number one because it's the most technically impressive region. It's number one because it is Pokémon. It's where everything started and it still holds up.

Every region has something to love. Even Kalos with its weak story gave us some of the best Pokémon designs ever. Even Galar with its rushed plot gave us the Wild Area and some amazing Gigantamax forms.

The beauty of Pokémon is that different regions connect with different people. Some players will always love the region they started with. Some will have found their favorites later on.
