This NOS could be a commercial offering from a software vendor or an open-source option like SONiC (Software for Open Networking in the Cloud), which was originally developed by Microsoft and is now a major open-source project. This trend provides customers with greater choice, avoids vendor lock-in, and can significantly reduce costs. It is fostering a new ecosystem of open networking, with a vibrant community of developers contributing to open-source software that can run on a variety of hardware platforms.
Trend 2: The Proliferation of Custom Silicon and SmartNICs
A second major trend, particularly within the hyperscale cloud providers, is the move towards designing custom silicon. As their scale and needs have become so vast and specific, companies like Amazon (with its Nitro system) and Google have started designing their own custom chips and hardware to offload and accelerate networking and security functions that would normally be handled by the server's main CPU. This includes creating their own SmartNICs (Smart Network Interface Cards). A SmartNIC is more than just a standard network card; it is a programmable card with its own processors and memory that can handle tasks like network virtualization, encryption, and firewalling directly on the card itself. This frees up the server's CPU to focus exclusively on running the customer's application, leading to significant performance improvements and better server utilization. While this trend is currently limited to the largest players, the technologies and concepts it pioneers, such as offloading network functions, are likely to trickle down to the broader enterprise market over time.
Trend 3: AI in Network Operations (AIOps) and the Self-Driving Network
